How many adults in the household?
How many children and what ages?
What type of home do you live in (apartment, house, loft, etc)?
Do you own or rent? If you rent do you have permission to have a chinchilla?
Have you ever surrendered a pet to a shelter? If yes, please explain?
Have you ever owned a chinchilla before? How many? Do you still own? Will this chinchilla be caged with another or seperately?
How much research have you done on owning a chinchilla?
Tell me what you know about chinchillas, and let me know what you still need information on so I can help you be the best chinchilla parent you can be.
Male chinchillas require special monthly checks for hair rings, are you
familiar with this need?
What is you plan for the chinchilla? (pet, breeder, etc.)
Maintaining a healthy, happy chinchilla can cost $50 or more a month. Are
you financially able to care for a chinchilla?
A chinchilla's life span can be 25 to 35 years. Are you prepared to make this
commitment to a new pet?
Please discribe the housing (cage) you will provide for the chinchilla. (we
do not approve of wire bottom cages for our chinchillas as they are harmful
and dangerous to a chinchilla)
Do you have a cage already or will you be looking for one?
Where will you locate the chinchilla's cage? ( remember they are nocturnal
and can be very noisy at night)
What will you be feeding your chinchilla? Treats may only be given sparingly and only after 6 months of age! Do you know how to properly transition your chinchilla to a new food? How much food and Hay should you feed? What is the appropriate Hay to feed?
Is your home air conditioned? ( a chinchilla is very sensitive to
temperature change and can easily die from over heating)
Do you have other pet's in your home? If so please tell me about them. How many? ages? breeds? how long you've had them? Where did you get them? Any information helps.
Do you have an exotic vet close? ( remember small animal vets are not
qualified to treat a chinchilla, there needs are very differant then rabbits
or guineas and the wrong treatment can be deadly.) Are you prepared to have to spend or more if necessary in a chinchilla emergancy?
If the need every came that you could no longer care for the chiinchilla,
please explain your plans for it. Most shelters do not except exotic pets and most are not knowledgalbe in the care for chinchillas. Please never drop an unwanted chinchilla at a shelter, there are many rescues available to help.
Chinchillas need lots of excerise. Can you provide your chinchilla with at least a half hour of play time out of it's cage per day? Will you also be able to provide it with an appropriate wheel in it's cage. Most wheels sold in pet stores for chinchillas are not safe. wire and mesh ones can cause feet problems. crossbar ones
Please tell me why you would like to own a chinchilla as a pet?Add what ever else you would like to tell me, every little bit helps.
